Kathmandu Durbar Square

Kathmandu Durbar Square lies in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley. The locals know this area as 'Hanuman Dhoka'- ancient seat of the Nepalese Royalty. The Royal Palace during the medieval times was not merely for the Royal activities only but also used as the center of administration, culture activities and festivals. The historical buildings and temples here were erected from the time of Late Newar Kings Ratna Malla (1484-1520 AD) to Prithivi Bir Bikram Shah(1875-1911 AD) covering the Malla, Shah and Rana Regime periods of the Nepalese history. The entire complex here is named after the monkey god-'Hanuman'. One can see a huge stone statue of 'Hanuman' painted in orange and covered in red cloth next to the main entrance-The Golden Gate- of the palace. Lord Hanuman is regarded as a powerful protector of the entire Durbar Square. Durbar Square
